This page explains how the TaxCloud SuiteApp handles discounts on NetSuite transactions — what gets sent to TaxCloud, how the taxable base is reduced, and which discount configurations aren't supported.
1. Overview
TaxCloud calculates the tax. Discounts are sent to TaxCloud as reductions to the taxable base, and tax is calculated on the discounted (net) amount, at each item's Taxability Information Code (TIC) and destination rate.
Only pre-tax discounts affect the tax calculation.
2. Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax
Whether a discount affects tax is controlled by the discount item's Apply Before Sales Tax checkbox.
| Setting | Sent to TaxCloud? | Effect on tax |
| Apply Before Sales Tax — checked (pre-tax) | Yes | Reduces the taxable base; tax is calculated on the discounted (net) amount. |
| Apply Before Sales Tax — unchecked (post-tax) | No | Tax is charged on the full price; the discount only reduces the invoice total. |
3. Discount Types
TaxCloud SuiteApp supports three ways to apply a discount to a transaction:
| Discount Type | Where It's Placed | What It Applies To |
| Line-level | Discount item on the line immediately after the product line | Only that specific line |
| Body-level (header) | Transaction header Discount field | The whole order, distributed proportionally across taxable lines (excludes shipping/handling) |
| Order-level via Subtotal | Discount item placed after a Subtotal line | All lines above the Subtotal, treated as order-level |
Line-Level Discount
- Placed on the line immediately after the product line it discounts.
- Applies only to that specific line.
- If pre-tax, sent to TaxCloud as a line-item discount for that line.
- Supports both percentage and fixed-dollar discounts.
Example: a $100 line with a -10% pre-tax discount — tax is calculated on $90.
Body-Level (Header) Discount
- Set in the transaction header Discount field.
- Applies to the whole order.
- If pre-tax, sent as an order-level discount and distributed proportionally across the taxable lines.
- Shipping and handling are excluded from the order-level discount.
Example: lines of $100 and $50 with a -10% header discount — tax on $90 and $45.
Order-Level Discount via Subtotal
- A Discount item placed after a Subtotal line applies to all lines above it and is treated as order-level.
4. Not Supported: Discount Items with Their Own Tax Rate
A discount item configured with its own tax code or tax rate is not supported.
- The discount's own rate is ignored — TaxCloud taxes the net amount at the product item's rate.
- Discount items should not be assigned a separate tax code; only set Apply Before Sales Tax.
5. Quick Reference
Keep these rules in mind when configuring discount items:
- Set Apply Before Sales Tax to control whether a discount reduces the taxable base.
- Line-level discounts affect only their own line; header and Subtotal discounts affect multiple lines.
- Shipping and handling are never reduced by an order-level discount.
- Never assign a discount item its own tax code — TaxCloud always taxes at the product item's rate.
